I had to create a series of posters based on an even. I chose HorrorHound Weekend, a horror convention. Each poster had to have a specific type of style and had to be united in some way. I chose popular movie villains and used typography as my style by using taglines from each character’s movie to create the character’s shape. It was pretty simple, although time consuming. I just drew each character’s outline, divided each outline into sections by using guidelines and manipulating each individual letter with the warp tool.

Beginning of Another Year

Typography Quote Poster

Typography Quote Poster

It’s the beginning of another year, which happens to be my last year at Ivy Tech Community College Southwest. I can say I’m pretty happy with the progress I have made over my time here. At first I didn’t know how to use any of the programs and now I’m pretty comfortable with them. I’ve still have more to learn, but I’m proud to say I will give it my all and put in the time to learn all I can so I can be a successful graphic designer.

For the first assignment in my graphic design II class, a simple typography poster. I had to choose a quote no more than 18 words long and draw at least 3 illustrations to accompany the text. I chose a line from my favorite band Radiohead (shocking, I know). It didn’t take me long to figure out my quote because this has always been on of my top favorite lines from this band. It’s a 11X17 poster size document made in Adobe Illustrator, which I am quite comfortable using this program out of all the other ones. The only thing I would consider changing is the wave illustration. I only had 3 hours to come up with this and I feel if I could have tinkered with it more it would be better, but all in all I’m happy with it.

Project2_BS copy2

This project was a bit tricky. We had to choose a product that had a significant part of our childhood. But that wasn’t the hard part. The hard part was to convey what that product is without using any logos or known images from that product, the actual title, or basically anything commerical about the product.

Challenge accepted!

I chose Kool-Aid because as a kid I wasn’t allowed to drink sodas, so Kool-Aid was kind of a big deal in my house. So at this point I can’t use the words “Kool-Aid” or the logo and anything. It was tough, but after a little while I thought “what do I think of when I say Kool-Aid?”. Kool-Aid is “artifical” so I thought of things to convey artifical: Robots, circut boards, things like that. Another thing that made Kool-Aid special for me growing up was the silly straws. I always had to have my silly straw when drinking Kool-Aid and the different colors of the silly straws represent the different flavors of Kool-Aid. Since grape was the best flavor, I chose purple for the color of the substnce the robot is drinking. There are circuts in the glass because Kool-Aid always gave me tons of energy to run around outside for hours.

I will also post the original verison of this project. There wasn’t too much I revised in this project other than the background, but I think it makes a huge difference.

Informtion Graphic

Pro4_BS copy copy

So I finally have new graphics to put on here!! YAY!

The project was to create an information graphic and collect data that was revelent to me as a person. I chose to see which songs were the most popular on my IPod. This information was collected on my ITunes. The size of the song titles represent how many times I’ve listened to tht specific song on my IPod. The bigger the song title, the most often I’ve listened to that song. The “side-bars” tell who the artist is and the number of times I’ve listened to it. The colors in the background also represent the colors of the song titles. Since Rock Lobster is th most listened to, the color red takes up most of the background. And I have a skull on there because it’s revelent to me because I like skulls. I chose to this information because if you knew me, you’d know how weird and chaotic my music taste is. I’ve got to say Rock Lobster is probably one of my favorite songs ever. I almost always listen to it when it comes on.

This is actually my revised version of this project. I’m much happier with the revised verison. I’ll post the original soon so you can see the differences between them.

Text and Texture

Thom Yorke

So this is my first photoshop project for this new semester. For this project we’re to pick a famous event, person, or world-known musican and show our texture and typography skills. I chose Thom Yorke (also known from the band Radiohead) because he is my number one favorite musican of all time. this project is about 3/4 of the way done, and I will be posting the finished project next week at some point. for the background image I chose the “Hail to the Thief” album art and inverted to colors and gave it a neon style. On the subject’s face, I created an explosion effect, which took maybe 3-5 hours, but gives a textured 3D look along with the blue pixel texture overlay on the subject’s face. And on the subject’s jacket I used Thom Yorke’s solo album “Eraser” album artwork to overlay on his jacket. In the background there’s the Radiohead bear logo and the text is some of my favorite song lyrics. I love this project because I had a ton of freedom to do basically anything I wanted and I tried out some new effects and techinques that I hadn’t used in the past. And I’m glad I got to use Thom Yorke as my subject for a project and also glad I wasn’t the only person who knew who that was. Hope you enjoy!

Book Cover Final Project: The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray Book Cover

For out final project in my Imaging class we were to design a realistic book cover.

For someone who reads often, this was the hardest project for me. Before settling on this cover design, I had started designing 4 different book covers.

After a while to think about it, I chose The Picture of Dorian Gray. It’s one of my favorit classics and I felt like I could do a lot of different and creative things with this title.

This design is a little different from my other works because I used more textures and shadows than I did with any other projects, which I think shows how much I am continuing to learn.

And not to brag, but I did get a few compliments on this cover in the printing lab while I was mounting it. lol

Movie Poster Projects: Atonement

Atonement Movie Poster

For our final project in my computer graphics class we had to choose a movie and make a real life movie poster. One of my favorite movies is Atonement, because it’s a very good story and also because I LOVE James McAvoy. lol

I did have some movie logos and movie credits, but I could only load a JPEG on here.

Everyting on the poster was done in PhotoShop, beside the logos and credits, which were done in both Illustrator and InDesign. The title was a little tricky to get how I wanted it to look, but I think it looks very good.

I didn’t have too much trouble with my idea for how I wanted to poster to look, but I did do at least 3 different designs. I can say I’m very happy with how it turned out.

Now at the end of the semester, I can say that I have improved a lot from the beginning of this course. I really enjoy doing these kinds of things and hopefully I can make a living doing what I love.
